Outlander makeup artist reveals closeup of Jamie’s scars

facebooktwitterreddit

Outlander fans know all about the scars that criss-cross Jamie Fraser’s back, markings left by Jack Randall. They look so real, sometimes it can take a moment to remember that they’re created by a makeup artist. Wendy Kemp Forbes is responsible for making those scars on actor Sam Heughan’s back.

Forbes took to Instagram to show off her work, and I can’t decide if seeing what it looks like behind the scenes is more or less disturbing than seeing it on the actual show:

Back in 2017, Forbes spoke to Entertainment Weekly about her process and how it takes over two hours to prep Heughan for filming. I’m shocked by how 1) someone can reamin still for so long while getting work done on them, and 2) how the makeup artists can labor on a live human being for that long to produce such perfection.

“Perfection” is a relative word here. The scars are quite disturbing.

And as Forbes revealed, the prosthetics for the scars change as Jamie’s journey goes on and he gets older:

"There was talk about changing the shape of the scars after 20 years, but we decided against that. We just keep coloring it lighter so the scars don’t look as red as they were 20 years previously. I know people get obsessed that it’s different. But they are all still there. It’s the same run of pieces since season 1."

I hope they clean those pieces often…
