Are Dustin and Suzie Poo to blame for Stranger Things tragedy?
If you’ve watched the third season of Stranger Things, you’re likely still mourning the loss of Jim Hopper. (Though we’re still hoping he’s not lost after all, but that’s a different story altogether.) An iconic character from the very beginning of the series, Hopper supposedly met his end when Joyce closed the door to the Upside Down, getting caught in the explosions that followed.
But while Hopper’s death can easily be chocked up to bad luck and bad timing, many fans are actually blaming Dustin and his girlfriend Suzie for the former sheriff’s fate. Dustin finally reaches his Utah-based girlfriend Suzie on his walkie-talkie during the finale, but before she gives him the information needed to close the gate, she forces him to sing a duet of “NeverEnding Story” with her.
And even if the moment between the two offers some comic relief during a tense finale, it also grants the Russian hitman time to locate Joyce and Hopper — leading to the pair’s fight with him and the tragedy that follows.
Many fans vented their frustrations about the incident on Twitter, as they do. An example:
Some fans go deeper and ask if Suzie is also responsible for Billy’s death. After all, while Suzie and Dustin were singing their song, Eleven and the others were facing off with the Mindflayer. The monster winds up killing Billy as soon as he turns on it and defends Eleven, but then it immediately shuts down when Joyce shuts the gates. Had the gate been shut sooner, things might not have gotten that far.

So, if Suzie would have just given Joyce and Hopper the code earlier, would Billy and Hopper still be alive? It’s possible. But it’s also not entirely fair to pin everything that happened on her — after all, she had no idea what was going on when Dustin asked her for the code. If anything, he should have been a bit more upfront about how dire the situation was.
