The Hollywood Reporter reports that Birgit Nutter, the wife of Game of Thrones director David Nutter, has died following a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 56.

David Nutter, of course, is remembered by Game of Thrones fans as the man behind the camera for some of the most iconic episodes of the show, including “The Rains of Castamere,” “The Dance of Dragons,” “Mother’s Mercy,” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” from this most recent season. Based on what I’ve heard the cast members say, he was beloved on set. In HBO’s The Last Watch documentary, while chronicled filming on the final season, he came off as soft-spoken and empathetic.

Birgit and David were married for 32 years. They met after Birgit, who was born in Gotzis, Autria, came to America to work as an au pair for a family in Florida in the early 1980s. In addition to her husband, Birgit is survived by her children, Zoe and Ben.

David’s production company, GenreBend Productions, released a statement describing Birgit as “always politically savvy, fun-loving and possessing an eternally ‘glass-half-full’ view of life … [her] passion was her family and her vast circle of friends, across the globe, whom she touched with her bluhende leben — her powerful soul.”

Birgit was honored in a memorial service at Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church on August 3. The hearts of everyone at WiC, and I imagine many Game of Thrones fans around the world, go out to David Nutter and his family.
