Confirmed: Ewan McGregor to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in Disney+ series

Hey, remember when we all thought Disney would be making a Star Wars standalone movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi? And do you also remember getting all excited when Ewan McGregor, who played Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, grew out the same beard he was sporting in Revenge of the Sith?

Apparently not. After some time passed without any news, McGregor went on The View and was asked point-blank about the rumors of his return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. His response? “There’s no plans, as such, to do it, as far as I know.” And just like that, our hopes and dreams were deader than General Grievous.

Well, it’s time to fire up the old hyper rumor generator once more. Jordan Maison of Cinelinx is reporting that, according to two separate sources, he’s learned that McGregor has “actually put pen to paper and inked a contract to return as the iconic Jedi Master.” Maison says that this would not be a Star Wars standalone movie like Rogue One or Solo, but rather a live-action television series to air exclusively on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+.

Is this true? UPDATE: Yep, it’s true. Deadline has confirmed that the 48-year-old McGregor will indeed be returning to the role of Obi-Wan in an as-yet-unnamed Disney+ series.

Next week, on August 23, Disney is kicking off its D23 Expo, which could be the perfect place to reveal more details about this. Also, this marks the third live-action Star Wars series we know about. When Disney+ drops in November, viewers will immediately be able to watch The Mandalorian, which stars Game of Thrones veteran Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) as the title character. There’s also a show about Cassian Andor, Diego Luna’s character from Rogue One, in the works. And now Obi-Wan is coming, too! It’s getting harder and harder to resist subcribing.
