Casting new for Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels just keeps getting better. The latest is that Piper Perabo (Lost and Delirious, Looper, Angel has Fallen) has come aboard in a recurring role. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Perabo will play Linda Craft, a “fading American Beauty rose, disappointed with her husband and bored with her constrained suburban life.”

Perabo joins Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer (Magda, a demoness who can change into anyone she chooses), as well as seven other actors: Adam Rodriguez, Thomas Kretschmann, Dominic Sherwood, Ethan Peck, Michael Gladis, Lorenza Izzo and Sebastian Chacon.

Set in 1930s Los Angeles, this new Penny Dreadful unfolds thusly: “When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.”

So City of Angels will have demons, murder, family strife, and a  Latino “Zoot Suit” gang called The Pachucos. As if I needed any further reason to watch this show.

The first Penny Dreadful burned brightly but briefly. It explored Victorian-era horror fiction and folklore and featured a wonderful performance from Eva Green at its center. The new show is in a completely different place and time, which is a good way to keep the concept fresh.
