A new class enrolls at Brakebills University in upcoming Magicians comics

If you’re a fan of author Lev Grossman’s The Magicians novels, then you’re probably going to be excited to learn he is collaborating with Boom! Studios for a five-issue comic book series that will take place at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy, the raunchy college version of Hogwarts.

But the new stories won’t involve the students you’ve come to know on SyFy’s The Magicians — Eliot, Alice, Margo, Quentin (*sniff*) and the rest. These books will introduce a whole new class of students. Grossman will team-up with writer Lilah Sturges and illustrator Pius Bak for the run. “The Magicians universe is deep and rich and there are so many places and stories that the books just never got to,” he said in a statement. “Lilah and Pius are going to take us there — with me kibitzing over their shoulders — and it’s going to be incredible.”

The comic will be called, appropriately enough, The Magicians, and will introduce seven new students: Audrey, Brian, Keshawn, Pat, Andy, Emily and Sophie.

Sturges, who worked on The Magicians: Alice’s Story — a graphic novel about Alice Quinn — had this to say:

"There are so many things to say in this world that Lev has created, so many potential stories just waiting to be told. Setting [the new series] at Brakebills gives us the chance to tell all-new stories in a familiar setting, with a mixture of existing and new characters, and give readers something that feels very fresh while being unmistakably The Magicians."

As an avid fan of the books and the show on SyFy, I’m very much looking forward to diving into this new material. The Magicians issue #1 will be available on November 6.
