Take the Black Live: David Benioff and Dan Weiss, future moguls?

It’s the first day of the rest of our Take the Black lives. Longtime cohost Cheryl Wassenaar has moved on to other things, but colleague and hero Mia Johnson is here with me to talk all things fantasy, sci-fi and Game of Thrones. The future begins now.
This week, we dive deep into the news that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have signed a multi-million dollar deal to produce content for Netflix. There are a lot of angles here? Why did the pair go with Netflix over WarnerMedia and Disney, which both seem like more obvious choices? What kind of content might they create? What won’t they create? How does the backlash to the final season of Game of Thrones play into the deal? Is Netflix also buying their reputation? Is the deal worth it? Are any of these super-deals worth it, on the whole?
Honestly, I could have talked about that for a while longer, but we had to eventually move on to talk about George R.R. Martin not writing A Dream of Spring after finishing The Winds of Winter. Don’t worry, it’s not scary in context.
And finally, Mia tells us about a Q&A she attended with one of the directors of Avengers: Endgame, which is officially the highest-grossing movie of all time…although possibly not when adjusted for inflation. We get into it.
