Starz American Gods — based on Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name has been...interesting. The show, about a brewing battle between the olds gods and the new gods of the Earth, all of whom subsist on the worship of the people — doesn’t lack for visual ambition or narrative risk, but between the sluggish pace and a series of well-publicized behind-the-scenes dramas, it’s never been on completely solid footing.
Hopefully, those days are behind it. Speaking at the 2019 TCAs, Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch expressed oodles of confidence in new showrunner/executive producer Charles “Chic” Eglee. “We brought Chic on, who’s doing a tremendous job with season three,” Hirsch said. “Our partners at Fremantle continue to do a really good job to bring that show back into network. We feel pretty good about what’s happening with the show. […] What I can speak to is what’s going on for season three. Based on what Chic is bringing to the table, we’re seeing in the scripts, writing and development, it’s coming on really, really well.”
So that’s good to hear. Also boarding the hype train is star Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), who’s currently out promoting the Blu-ray release of American Gods season 2. Speaking to Bleeding Cool, Whittle confirmed that he’d be starting production towards the end of September, and is excited about the “incredible stories” he’s seen in the scripts he’s read so far. “For me, season 3 is going to be – by far – the best season yet.”
We will hold out hope. In the meantime, check out this special feature on how the show brought together the scene at the House on the Rock, a meeting place for the old gods, in season 2:
Gaiman’s right: the House on the Rock is a real place. I can’t speak to whether it radiates spiritual energy or whatever.
