Stan Lee’s daughter slams Disney’s treatment of her father
By Corey Smith
A lot of people were quick to react after news broke that Spider-Man would no longer appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, on account of Disney and Sony being unable to agree on a new deal over how the character could be used. Adding her voice to the discussion is Joan Celia (JC) Lee, daughter of Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.
While many (including me) were lamenting that Spider-Man is no longer a part of the MCU, JC told TMZ that she supports the move. “Marvel and Disney seeking total control of my father’s creations must be checked and balanced by others who, while still seeking to profit, have genuine respect for Stan Lee and his legacy,” she said. “Whether it’s Sony or someone else’s, the continued evolution of Stan’s characters and his legacy deserves multiple points of view.”
Does she have a point about Lee’s characters deserving to have their stories told from multiple points of view? Given that it means Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will no longer being part of a universe where he was becoming an increasingly important figure, we doubt many fans will see it that way, but so long as we don’t have to watch Spider-Man dance on a table again, we suppose we can get behind it.
JC went on, and got a little more personal:
"When my father died, no one from Marvel or Disney reached out to me. From day one, they have commoditized my father’s work and never shown him or his legacy any respect or decency. In the end, no one could have treated my father worse than Marvel and Disney’s executives."
Talk about a verbal Hulk smash, that’s about as harsh as it comes.
Disney and Marvel have yet to address Lee’s comments. What say you, Marvel fans? Can you see Spider-Man’s return to Sony a good thing? Sound off below!
