Disney offers discount on Disney+ for early adopters
By Ariba Bhuvad
Disney is pulling out all the stops to bring in as many subscribers as possible for Disney+, their upcoming streaming service. At the D23 Expo this weekend, there was an entire section dedicated to the service, with rows of tablets for attendees looking to sign up ahead of the November 12 drop date. And Disney is offering a special deal to early adopters: an “exclusive” three-year deal for the discounted price of $140.97 plus tax.
This amounts to approximately $46.99/year, which is a little over $20 less than the yearly price of $69.99 if you sign up later. Or if you want it down further, that’s $3.92 per month vs $5.83 per month. It’s pretty cheap either way (Netflix’s standard plan is $8.99 per month), but who doesn’t love a discount?
Anyway, I was at the Expo and signed up there, whereupon I was given a cool Founder’s Circle pin, which made me and the rest of the early birds feel very special.
But we’re not special, because just days later, Disney has extended this offer to all D23 members, according to SYFY Wire. What does being a D23 member mean exactly? It means you’re a part of Disney’s official fanclub. There are two levels of this membership: General and Gold. The General membership is free and gives you access to newsletters, breaking news, etc. On the other hand, a Gold membership for one person will run you something in the neighborhood of $99.99 per year, plus tax. If you do Gold Family, it’s about $129.99 plus tax. In Gold Family, members can bring along three guests to D23 events, where gold members get their own exclusive, faster-moving line to stand in.
If you’re a D23 member already, you can sign up for this limited-time offer now. If you are now feeling the urge to become a D23 member just to take advantage of this deal, you can do so until September 1, right up until 11:59 p.m. PST.
While I’m eager to start using Disney+, I do feel a little bamboozled by the company here. They really tried to make D23 attendees feel special about this offer, and I know friends back home were super jealous of the fact that I could take advantage of it. But at the end of the day, it’s not a huge deal.
Of course, Disney is extending this offer to the masses because it really, really wants Disney+ to be successful. They’re competing with giants like Netflix and Amazon, so it’s crucial they make a good first impression with users.

I’m not sure why they’re worried, though. With the amount of old and new content they’re releasing, the service is pretty much guaranteed to be a smash. If I were Netflix, I’d be nervous. But that’s a story to talk about come November.
