First image from Penny Dreadful: City of Angels drops as filming begins

To this day, the end of Penny Dreadful — Showtime’s moody supernatural drama — is a sore spot for fans. For three seasons, the show was widely acclaimed, for the way it drew from Victorian horror fiction to weave a compelling tale and for terrific performances from the likes of Eva Green, who played the tortured Vanessa Ives. It ended abruptly, and fans still wonder if that’s the way it was always planned, or if something else intervened.
But with a new installment of the show on the horizon, it looks like fans can put those questions behind them. Creator John Logan is returning to Showtime with Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, a whole new story with all new characters (mostly) but hopefully with the same attention to detail and sense of atmosphere. While the original series took place in Victorian England, this show is set in Los Angeles in the 1930s, and will draw heavily from Hispanic folklore.
As Showtime tweets above, production on the new series has officially begun. Those are cast members Nathan Lane and Daniel Zovatto, who play LA detectives Lewis Michener and Tiago Vega, respectively. The cast also includes Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones), Kerry Bishé, Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, Lin Shaye, Rory Kinnear (Frankenstein’s monster in the original Penny Dreadful), Piper Perabo, Adam Rodriguez, Thomas Kretschmann, Lorenza Izzo, Michael Gladis, Dominic Sherwood and Ethan Peck (Spock in Star Trek: Discovery).
According to ComingSoon.net, some of the characters will follow the entity known as Santa Muerto (Izzo), while others will align themselves with the Devil. Presumably, a lot of conflict will come from clashes between these two groups, although you have to think that a third option is available somehow.
Also, remember when I said that the show had “mostly” new characters? I added that caveat because the Devil also featured in the original Penny Dreadful, primarily in the second season. Will this be the same character? We’ll find out when Penny Dreadful: City of Angels drops, probably sometime next year.
