The Magicians cast talks season 5: “There’s a new king” in Fillory
The Magicians won’t return to Syfy until 2020, but while fans wait, the cast is talking to TV Insider about what to expect. It looks like season 5 will be drastically different from the first four seasons, so if you want to go catch up on what you missed without getting SPOILED, then read no further.
Still here? Great.
In the season 4 finale, Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) made the ultimate sacrifice and died to return magic to the world. It was a shocking move, especially since Quentin is alive and well in the books. Arjun Gupta, who plays Penny, says the group of friends is “in really, really different places in their grief, and that sets up an interesting dynamic.”
Throughout his time on the show, Quentin formed bonds with each member of the group. He may have been closest to Julia (Stella Maeve), with whom he was best friends since childhood. Maeve believes Julia, with her newly-regained goddess powers, will start to look for ways to stop the pain. “Julia is … suppressing it and just trying to save the world again,” she said.
A couple of Quentin’s friends remain in the magical world of Fillory, where all is not well. These include Eliot (Hale Appleman) who spent all of season 4 possessed by a monster, and Margot (Summer Bishil), who was recently deposed as High King of Fillory. And if you think that regaining their crown will be easy, think again. “There’s a new king in town and we don’t know anything about him,” said Appleman. At the very end of season 4, these two return to Fillory…300 years after they left it. It’s no wonder someone new has taken the top spot in that time.
Whatever happens, I’m looking forward to the return of magic…like, “‘80s cocaine-level magic.” It’s going to be nuts.
