Doctor Who: The Legacy of Time has been re-released already!
By James Aggas
After selling out completely of the limited edition, a new standard edition has been released for Big Finish’s twentieth anniversary box set The Legacy of Time!
When Big Finish announced over a year ago that they were planning to release a six-hour box set celebrating twenty years of their many Doctor Who audios, demand was unsurprisingly high. So high, in fact, that just over a month after it was released, physical copies of The Legacy of Time sold out!
It’s not really that surprising. The initial box set that was released was a limited edition, with a pressing of just 4,000 copies. Big Finish have released many limited editions over the years, but not many with a pressing that low. And considering that this was an “event” release – perhaps the biggest release Big Finish have ever done – demand was always going to be higher than the supply. Especially once the product was released.
But if you missed out on the limited edition, don’t worry. Not only can you still download a copy digitally from Big Finish’s website. But, for those who enjoy physical media, a standard edition set of The Legacy of Time is now available!
Standard vs Limited: What’s the difference?
One thing that’s clear to see is that the new standard edition is cheaper than the limited edition was. In fact, you can get the physical copy of the standard edition for cheaper than you can get the download copy of the limited edition.
So why the price difference? Well for one thing, there’s the packaging. Unsurprisingly, the limited edition came in very special packaging that was designed to stand out, housing eight CDs and looking a little larger than Big Finish’s usual limited edition box sets.
By contrast, going by the details on the website, the new standard edition has been released in a new jewel case with a slipcover. While it’ll likely still look nice on the shelf, it may not look quite as good as the limited edition does.

But the biggest key difference is what’s definitely not included in this six-disc box set. Oh, the entire story is still there, at least. But it won’t include the bonus interviews that the original set did, which were so extensive that they had to be spread across two separate discs!
Now, bonus interviews won’t matter to everyone, and I know that some fans prefer to skip them. But for many of us, the in-depth looks that Big Finish have given us over the years are always fascinating to listen to. Whether it’s how a writer came up with a brilliant idea, or hearing how the cast feel about being reunited with people they worked with decades ago, it’s an interesting glimpse to have.
So what edition you go for really depends on preference. If you’re someone who prefers having something physically or can do without special features in general, then the new standard edition would be an easy option to go for. If you think an extra two hours are worth it, downloading the limited edition is certainly recommended.
Which edition will you go for? The limited edition on download, or the new standard edition? Do you have the limited edition of this very special release already? If so, what did you think of it? Let us know in the comments below.
