The Wheel of Time cast has table read for season 1!
By Dan Selcke
It has begun. Amazon is adapting Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s massive Wheel of Time series for TV, and it looks like the cast recently started in on a table read for the first season.
That’s an image from the Instagram Stories of Daniel Henney, who’s playing the character of al’Lan Mandragoran. “1st table read day,” he writes over a picture of a canal, his Wheel of Time script edging into the bottom of the frame. I don’t know where exactly the table read is happening, but it looks nice.
Although he has a rich character arc of his own, we’ll probably first meet Al’Lan Mandragoran as the Warder of the Aes Sedai Moraine (Rosamund Pike). Basically, he’s her bodyguard and protecter, joined to her and given certain physical and mental enhancements. When the story starts, Al’Lan and Moraine arrive in the remote Two Rivers region searching for the Dragon Reborn, a figure of prophecy who can either save or destroy humanity. They’ll meet protagonists Rand al’Thor (Josha Straowski), Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford), Mat Cauthon (Barney Harris), Egwene al’Vere (Madeleine Madden), and Nynaeve al’Meara (Zoe Robins), and off we go on our adventure.
There are 14 books in The Wheel of Time series, so Amazon has a very tall mountain to climb. Will it be able to reach the peak? Honestly, it’s anyone’s guess. Amazon is clearly aiming for a Game of Thrones-type success here, and maybe it will get its wish — The Wheel of Time certainly has enough meat on its bones to satisfy fantasy fans — but it will take intelligent culling, savvy writing, and a commitment to see this thing through.
