There have been some rumors flying lately about the release date of The Witcher, Netflix’s adaptation of author Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy series. Henry Cavill is Geralt, a superpowered monster hunter trying to make his way in a medieval world where the humans can be worse than the beasts. Anya Chalotra is Yennefer, a sorceress with an iron will, and Freya Allan is Ciri, a young princess who wraps their destinies together.
Looks pretty good.
We’ve known for a while that the first season of The Witcher would be dropping this year, but we didn’t know exactly when. A couple weeks back, a Netflix employee leaked that the plan was to drop it in October…but then Netflix disavowed him, because apparently he’s NOT an employee but rather just someone talking on the internet, and we were right back where we started.
UNTIL NOW! Yesterday, social media accounts for Netflix Netherlands posted an image detailing how many days viewers had to wait to watch a bunch of upcoming shows, including The Witcher. Check it out:
So we had 97 days to wait for The Witcher on September 11, meaning that the first season will drop on December 17, 2019.
Naturally, this image didn’t stay on social media for long — Netflix Netherlands quickly took it down, which probably means they realized they were giving something away they shouldn’t, which just convinces us that the information is accurate. I’m just gonna go ahead and circle December 17 on my calendar until I’m given a good reason to target another date.
And I am pretty excited for the show. There are a lot of series clamoring to be “the next Game of Thrones” these days, and while I’m under illusions that The Witcher could become that big, I like that HBO’s hit has inspired other studios to invest in fantasy shows, and this looks like a pretty good one.
Also, as a bonus, the Witcher books are pretty quick reads, so if you want to catch up and lord your knowledge over newbies once the show starts, there’s still time.
