At long last, we’re getting a Funko Pop! movie

Well, this had to happen sooner or later, right? Deadline reports that Warner Animation Group, the people behind the LEGO Movie series, will be making a movie starring Funko Pop! figures, the ubiquitous big-headed dolls based on all things pop culture. If you’re at work right now, there’s a good chance someone near you has at least one on their desk.

Oscar-nominated animator Teddy Newton is crafting the storyline, while fellow animation vet Mark Dindal will direct. “We’re thrilled for this opportunity and are committed to make an amazing Funko movie that stands on its own merit,” said Funko CEO Brian Mariotti. “This isn’t about selling toys or building a brand. The team at Warner Animation Group have a unique vision of what the first film should be and we are extremely excited to take this journey alongside them.”

“This isn’t about selling toys or building a brand.” Yeeeeaaaaaahhhh…I believe you, kind of. At the least, the LEGO movies have been strong enough on their own merits to be worth seeing, but we don’t need to pretend that they aren’t also intended to sell a few sets of building blocks. The best case scenario for the Funko movie is that it will have the same big-hearted, anarchic spirit as the LEGO films, with characters from different franchises mixing with wild abandon and no one taking things too seriously, but all of it anchored by a legitimately decent story.

On the other end of the spectrum, this could turn out like The Emoji Movie, which was…oof.

For better or worse, here we go. Honestly, I’m surprised it took this long for this movie to happen.
