Battlestar Galactica reboot coming to Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service
By Dan Selcke
This time next year, there will be approximately 30,000 streaming services competing for your dollars. Well, more like 10-ish, but still, it’s more than just Netflix and maybe one other thing, which is what a lot of people are probably used to.
Today, Variety unveiled details on Peacock, the newly named streaming service from NBCUniversal. Rolling out in April of 2020, Peacock will be home to a lot of popular shows, including The Office, 30 Rock, Cheers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Saturday Night Live, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Frasier, The Real Housewives series, Downton Abbey, Top Chef, and more. Of particular note is The Office, formerly a huge draw on Netflix. NBCUniversal is surely hoping to draw people in with that incredibly bingeable sitcom. Netflix has fought back by securing the rights to stream Seinfeld, while WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service HBO Max will have Friends and The Big Bang Theory.
So that’s how Peacock will compete with established content. What about original stuff? Naturally, there’s a lot coming, but the most interesting may be another reboot of Battlestar Galactica, this time from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail.
Battlestar Galactica was a cult 1978 sci-fi series about what happened to humanity after it lost a war with a robotic race known as the Cylons. Diminished to several ships worth of survivors, the remaining humans wander space looking for a new home. These days, people probably know the series best from the 2004 revival from Ronald D. Moore, which ran for four seasons. Apparently, Esmail is a big fan of that version — he’s even been in contact with Moore, according to Deadline — so expect to see shades of it in this new take.
But there’s a lot of other original content coming to Peacock, including:
- A revival of Saved by the Bell, with original cast members Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley. Zach Morris is the governor of California in this one. Sure, why not?
- Peacock is also rebooting ’80s sitcom Punky Brewster.
- Dr. Death, based on the true crime podcast of the same name and starring Alec Baldwin, Jamie Dornan and Christian Slater.
- The Amber Ruffin Show, a talk show hosted by Late Night with Seth Meyers breakout star Amber Ruffin.
- A series based on Aldous Huxley’s groundbreaking 1932 novel Brave New World, about a utopian society that has achieved peace and stability through the prohibition of monogamy, privacy, money, family and history itself. Is it a utopia? IS IT?
- Rutherford Falls, about a small town “local legend” (The Office star Ed Helms) who fights the moving of a historic statue. This one is co-created by Michael Schur, who’s had a hand in everything from The Office to Parks and Recreation to Brooklyn Nine-Nine to The Good Place, so it may be worth keeping an eye on.
- Angelyne, a limited series about the mysterious LA billboard model of the same name, starring Emmy Rossum.
And more.

There’s no work on how much Peacock will cost yet, but NBCUniversal has officially throw its hat into the ring.
Oh, and for those wondering, “Peacock” is a reference to the NBC logo. At least they didn’t call it “NBC+” or something.
