Robert Downey Jr. to return as Tony Stark in Black Widow movie
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were forced to say goodbye to some of their favorite characters after Avengers: Endgame, including Captain America, Black Widow and Iron Man. But while Chris Evans has officially retired from the role of Cap, Scarlett Johansson will be returning to the MCU to headline her own film, Black Widow. And she may not be the only character making a comeback.
As it turns out, Robert Downey Jr. may reprising his role as Iron Man in the upcoming film — meaning fans will get to see him as Tony Stark on the big screen once more even after he sacrificed himself in the fight against Thanos. Deadline, which is known for breaking all manner of entertainment industry news, casually dropped the information when reporting on the recent Saturn Awards. “Downey will be seen in the role of Stark one more time, however, in the Marvel prequel Black Widow in May 2020.” Well, okay!
Tony Stark’s involvement in the film, which takes place prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War, makes sense given his relationship with Natasha Romanoff. The two have worked with one another since her introduction to the MCU back in Iron Man 2, and though they may not have always seen eye to eye, their relationship definitely went from professional to personal during their tenure on the Avengers team.
Of course, Black Widow is also said to take place following Captain America: Civil War, meaning tensions between the gang will be at an all-time high. Given that Natasha sides with Steve Rogers during that film, we have to wonder what Tony will be up to during his appearance in the film. Will we see the two coming to terms with the fallout peacefully, or will they have be antagonistic towards each other? If this is Tony’s last hurrah onscreen, we hope he isn’t too much of a jerk.
And the “one more time” bit from Deadline suggests that this could be the last time Downey Jr. portrays Iron Man, so fans had better enjoy it while it lasts. Just a few weeks ago, there were whispers of the actor potentially returning to voice Iron Man in an animated Ironheart series, but without confirmation, it’s just speculation.
