Patrick Stewart is back as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in his new CBS All Access show, Star Trek: Picard. The show is set 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. Picard has retired from Starfleet and is running his own vineyard. He mourns the death of Data and is still troubled by the destruction of the planet Romulus.
Speaking with Examiner Live, Stewart explained his decision to return to the Star Trek universe, as well as what fans should expect when the show drops. “I don’t regard it as going back,” he said. “In fact, we are definitely moving the series forward and that’s what made the difference for me. It was a very difficult decision.”
It sounds like Stewart almost didn’t come back to Trek. I wonder what the deciding factor was for him.
The trailer suggests that we’ll see Picard and his ragtag crew investigate a possible return of the dreaded Borg. Also, it seems the surviving Romulans are somehow involved with experimenting on people who have been assimilated into the Borg collective.

If, after watching that trailer, you get the idea that Star Trek: Picard will have a darker edge than The Next Generation, it sounds like Stewart agrees with you.
"We are looking at a new world with new objectives, problems and issues that could not have been raised when we were making The Next Generation and I found that very exciting. It’s very exciting and people will be surprised and perhaps even shocked."
Well, I for one can’t wait to see how the story will play out when Star Trek: Picard hits CBS All Access in 2020.
