Rian Johnson talks Star Wars, future films could be far off

With The Mandalorian approaching in November and The Rise of Skywalker following not long after in December, Star Wars fans have plenty to look forward to during the tail end of this year. But after the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, things get a bit hazy in the Star Wars realm. While fans know that an Obi-Wan Kenobi series is in the works, along with several movies that will finally move away from the Skywalker family, we don’t really have an idea when we’ll be seeing any of these projects come to fruition.

And director Rian Johnson — who will be heavily involved with at least one of the Star Wars films that’s currently in the works — doesn’t seem to have a much clearer idea of Lucasfilm’s timeline when it comes to the franchise’s future.

“The truth is, they’re [Disney and Lucasfilm] still figuring out their schedule, their game plan,” Johnson said during an interview with the Evening Standard. “So if it’s possible for me to squeeze in another film before or while working on that, I will.”

The Last Jedi director has already been working on his comedic murder mystery, Knives Out, while fans await news on his Star Wars trilogy, and judging by his comments, he may take up another film during the interim — depending on when Disney decides to shift focus to more Star Wars films.

And to be fair, the company does have a lot on its plate already. With its streaming service, Disney+ launching in November and a slew of Marvel series and original content planned for the near and far future, it could be a while before Disney returns to a galaxy far, far away…

Thankfully, fans will at least have the final film in the current Star Wars trilogy to look forward to in the meantime.
