CBS All Access is making a 10-part adaptation of Stephen King’s epic The Stand, about a post-apocalyptic United States where most of the popular has been wiped out by a plague. In the vacuum, a man named Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) gathers wicked people to his side and tries to exert dominion over what remains of the Earth. Opposing him are a group of good-hearted people led by the 108-year-old Abagail Freemantle, affectionately known as Mother Abigail.

We’ve known for a minute that Whoopi Goldberg will be playing Mother Abigail. And it looks like she’s already in the thick of it. She showed off an artful sweep of stark white dreads the other day on The View:

“This will be my look for the next four months,” she said. That’s a nice ripe shooting schedule. And Mother Abigail isn’t involved in many action scenes or stuff like that. If they’re keeping Goldberg around that long, I can only imagine how long the whole schedule is.

Looking at Goldberg, keep in mind that the illusion is not complete. “You haven’t seen me painted up yet,” she said. “It’s kind of amazing what these guys have done with my face.”

"She’s gonna look like a very, very, very, veeeeery old lady. Very, very veeeeery old."

So young?

Honestly, the look is pretty cool. Maybe she should keep it.

All signs point to CBS All Access taking its time with this adaptation. I look forward to seeing what they do with one of King’s ambitious books.
