Check out the official poster for HBO’s Watchmen show

HBO’s Watchmen show debuts in late October, and the hype train has officially left the station. The other day, the show’s Twitter account released the official poster for the show, featuring Regina King’s character Angela Abar in costume as the masked police detective, Sister Night. The poster embraces the stark yellow and blue coloring used in Alan Moore’s graphic novel, and I dig it.

“Set in an alternate history where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own,” reads HBO’s official synopsis.

Picking up 30 years after the events of Moore’s classic, Watchmen takes place largely in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where it appears several familiar characters have converged, older and possibly wiser…although I wouldn’t hold my breath. Jeremy Irons plays Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, Jean Smart plays FBI Agent Laurie Blake/Silk Specter, and there have been sightings of Doctor Manhattan in the trailers, although there’s no word on who’s playing him.

Cast members sharing the spotlight with Regina King include Don Johnson as Tulsa Police Chief Judd Crawford (who I suspect is Nite Owl but we’ll see), Tim Blake Nelson as Detective Looking Glass, Louis Gossett Jr. as Bass Reeves, and more.

Showrunner Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Lost) has some wild ideas for the show, and isn’t shy about tackling hot-button issues like police brutality and race relations. We’ll see how well he and his team pull it off when Watchmen premieres on Sunday, October 20, only on HBO.
