Giancarlo Esposito talks about his role in The Mandalorian
As the release of Disney’s new streaming service — and all of the series and movies associated with it — rapidly approaches, more and more information about upcoming content is surfacing. The first official trailer for The Mandalorian, the first-ever live-action Star Wars series, dropped last month, and since then, the actors have been dishing on their experiences working on the newest Star Wars story.
But even with new details surfacing, certain aspects of The Mandalorian have remained shrouded in mystery, including details about Giancarlo Esposito’s role. We know he’s playing a villain of sorts, a former Imperial governor named Moff Gideon who now finds himself with a private army following the fall of the Empire. (The Mandalorian takes place after Return of the Jedi but before The Force Awakens.)
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, Esposito shared a bit about his experience on The Mandalorian. The actor has apparently had an overall positive experience working on the Star Wars series. “I have an incredible costume, and it’s been wonderful to work with Jon Favreau, and the cast of this particular show is also fantastic,” he said. “It’s Star Wars reinvented. Another universe, another time, and I’m very, very excited to join that universe.”
We’re excited to see what he brings to a galaxy far, far away as well. We know from Breaking Bad that Esposito has a knack for portraying villains, and his experience as Gus Fring will certainly come in handy in a series focused on the underbelly of the Star Wars world.
Esposito was even nominated for an Emmy for his performance as Gus, this time playing the character in the Breaking Bad spin-off series Better Call Saul. He expressed gratitude for the ability to tackle the role for such a long period of time. “I feel as if I had a very great blessing and gift to be on Breaking Bad. I had a really fantastic run on that, but to come back and do it on Better Call Saul almost 10 years later, spanning two decades on two different shows as the same character, I think it kind of makes history in my mind.”

With any luck, Esposito’s character in The Mandalorian will have as much of an impact as his Breaking Bad character. After all, we’d love to see him spend a good chunk of time in this world — especially if he’ll be wowing us with his talents as a crime leader once more.
