Game of Thrones star Kit Harington (Jon Snow) has yet to watch the final season of the show that put him on the map. That info came out last night, after the show nocked its fourth win for Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys.

After the big moment, the cast and crew gathered round to answer questions from the press. At one point, a reporter asked about the fan backlash to the ending of the show, and Harington stepped forward to answer.

“I still haven’t seen the show,” Harington said as his castmates chuckled behind him. “So that’s how I dealt with that controversy — I haven’t seen the final season. But I know what it took to shoot it, and it was hard and everyone put all of their love and effort into it.”

"And controversy, I think for us, we knew what we were doing was right story-wise, and we knew that it was right for the characters because we’d lived with them for 10 years. So controversy for us didn’t really affect us."

Harington’s work as Jon Snow in the final season of the show got him a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but he lost to Pose star Billy Porter. Harington’s costar Emilia Clarke — who hilariously ducks down when the reporter asks about the controversy surrounding “the Dragon Queen” — was up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, but lost to Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer.

Other interesting parts of the video:

  • If you were hoping for new info about the upcoming Game of Thrones prequels, these aren’t the people to ask. “None of the people standing here are involved with it, I think,” said showrunner David Benioff. “That would be a question for George and HBO.”
  • Benioff also waxed rhapsodic about the family that had formed on set. “A lot of the people standing up here grew up on the show and the rest of us grew old on the show, and it’s a genuine, loving community. And I think the hardest part for us is that it’s over, and that we’re not gonna be working with them again, at least in the short term.”
  • Where do the showrunners hope will be the show’s legacy? Weiss admitted that it’s not really up to them, but hoped Game of Thrones would hold up over time. “It’s so gratifying to have reached this many people, and we hope that people who are a little bit too young to be watching it now will grow up and learn about it and watch it as well.”
  • Were the big events of season 8 planned since the beginning? Quoth Benioff: “It honestly just depends on the specifics. Like, it was always gonna be Bran as the king at the end. With some of the other choices, it came up along the way.”
  • Weirdly, Weiss says that politician, astronaut, and U.S. Navy captain Mark Kelly “nailed about 90% of [the ending].” Fan theories are always right eventually.

Congrats to the cast and crew! Maybe Harington can find some time to take in the final episodes in the post-show downtime.
