HBO chief had “no doubt” Game of Thrones would win Outstanding Drama Emmy

This past Sunday, the cast and crew of Game of Thrones showed up for their final Emmy awards ceremony. And while they were shut out of some notable categories, the series did bring home the night’s biggest honor: Outstanding Drama Series.

After the final season aired, there was a fair amount of backlash among fans who didn’t think it followed through, but HBO President of Original Programming Casey Bloys told Deadline there was “no doubt” in his mind the show would win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

"Obviously, it had so many nominations, there was a lot of love there. I don’t want to be greedy but I would have liked to win in some of the other categories, but I’ll take the [best drama] series going out."

We would have liked to see some more wins too, especially in the Supporting Actress category. But so it goes.

All things considered, HBO did very well, walking away with 34 Emmys, the most of any network. (Netflix came in second with 27, Amazon third with 15.) Still, Bloys had hoped that the final season of Veep would bring home some hardware, both for the show in general and for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ portrayal of President Selina Meyer. Instead, BBC’s Fleabag, with star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, took home the gold. “Obviously, I think it’s one of the funniest shows on television but listen, Fleabag and Phoebe are amazing, so if you’re going to lose to somebody, they’re great people to lose to,” Bloys said.

Similarly, Bloys wished Deadwood: The Movie could have won in the TV Movie category. There, HBO lost out to Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. “It’s such a special show and David is such a special creator,” Bloys said. “I don’t want to sit here and complain, we had a really good night, you can’t win them all but we’re really proud of everyone who was nominated, whether they won or not.”

“It’s nice to win, it’s nice to see everyone’s hard work recognized. We’ll spend tonight celebrating and tomorrow we’ll think about next year.”

Speaking of next year, might there be another Game of Thrones series up for awards then, either Jane Goldman’s prequel about the Age of Heroes or maybe even the recently rumored Targaryen-focused show headed by Colony co-creator Ryan Condal? On that topic, Bloys had “nothing to say.”
