New image from The Witcher shows off Geralt’s sword

Networks and streaming services are about to roll out the first batch of big-budget post-Game of Thrones fantasy programming. Over on HBO, fans can look forward to Watchmen and His Dark Materials. Disney is trading on the beloved Star Wars universe with The Mandalorian, and Apple TV+ is throwing its hat into the ring with See, a wildly expensive show about a post-apocalyptic world where everyone is blind except for Jason Momoa’s kids.

Not sure how well that last one will do. But still, it’s a good time to be a sci-fi and fantasy fan.

Netflix is getting in on the game, too. The Witcher, its adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel series, drops in December. Henry Cavill is in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia, a taciturn platinum blonde monster-hunter who must navigate a world where the people can be worse than the beasts…or at least that’s how Netflix’s synopsis puts it.

Netflix released a bunch of promo images a while back, showing off Geralt, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allan). Now there’s a new one of Geralt, looking grim against a cloudy sky and hefting a sword in anticipation of battle.

Fans have drilled down on the sword itself. In the books, Geralt has access to two swords: one made of steel and one of silver, the silver being his weapon of choice against particular monsters. In the video games by CD Projekt Red, Geralt carries around both swords at once, probably so players can have easy access, but in the books, he usually keeps the silver stored on his horse, Roach.

Here, we appear to be looking at the steel sword, which features a nice flourish of gemstones — I think — on the pommel. The studded armor is nice, too.

So far, The Witcher is looking like a winner. We don’t have a firm release date yet, but surely Netflix is working up to it.
