Outlander season 5: Claire and Jamie “make love without making love”

Outlander season 5 is shaping up to be a great one, if all the news out of last weekend’s New York Comic-Con is any indication. Not only did we get a new teaser and photos, but cast members shared new tidbits during a panel discussion. Longtime stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan (Claire and Jamie Fraser) will be producers this season, and I can’t wait to see what they bring to the table!
Balfe was particularly excited to see how things work behind the scenes.
"It has really been interesting to be able to see the behind the scenes…work that goes on. A lot of this has been us observing and learning and I think that was very important to us to see what great work that they do behind the scenes on Outlander, just watching the work of each different department and the work that they do. We have the most incredible crew back in Scotland and being able to sit in on production meetings, and hearing what each one of them contributes has been eye opening. As actors, you show up on the day and say, “Look at everything,” but to see that process has been really interesting."
The heart of Outlander has always been and always will be the love story between Jamie and Claire. It’s the foundation of the series and season 5 will explore it further, according to Heughan:
"They are a great unit. They are a great partnership. They are looking out for their extended family, but together they are really strong. We had a scene the other day – I can’t give away too much – but we made love without making love. For me, that is what we were trying to do."
They made love without making love, Sam? The mind reels. Fanfiction authors, pleast tell us how that would work.
Outlander season 5 will be a big one for Claire. Her abilities as a doctor will come into play in a big way, something Balfe really had to prepare for. Fans of Diana Gabaldon’s novels know that Claire creates penicillin in the fifth book, so Claire is getting ready to change medical history!
"We are really lucky we have this amazing medical advisor on the show called Dr. Claire, and she has been with us from the very beginning and I would be absolutely lost without her. Whenever we have a complicated medical procedure, I always meet with her. She talks me through everything I am going to do, everything from how you hold your scalpel, to how to tie a one-handed knot, to all of the different things."
Her name is really Dr. Claire? That’s too perfect.
