George R.R. Martin thanks Russian fans for Jon Snow figurine
By Dan Selcke
Love for Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire knows no nationality. That’s the heartwarming message behind this story about fans from the Siberian republic of Sakha, in Russia, who raised money to get local Yakutian jewelers to make a figurine modeled after Jon Snow, the bastard of Winterfell and King in the North.
The figurine, which looks kind of like an Academy Award, is made from silver, semi-precious stones and fossil ivory. I love the starkness of it, pun not intended but delightful.
What do we think? Does it resemble our boy?
I see it.
Anyway, the fans sent the figurine to A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin. The inscription on the base reads, “To George Martin, from Yakutia with love.” Aw. “We would like to thank the show’s creators for the magical world they gave us,” fan Tatyana Yegorova told the state-run TASS news agency.
Martin thanked them with a heartfelt message I can’t really understand because it’s dubbed over in Russian:
According to The Moscow Times, Martin thanks the fans for their “amazing” gift. “I’d like to thank my fans from Yakutsk for sending me this beautiful figurine. It looks amazing and it’s a really great gesture from your side.”

Martin also talked a little about the power of stories — particularly sci-fi and fantasy stories — to unite people across different national borders, and reminded his fans that he’s still working on two Song of Ice and Fire books. The world waits.
