Yes, of course R2-D2 will be in The Rise of Skywalker

Anthony Daniels has played the verbose protocol droid C-3PO since the very beginning of the Star Wars phenomenon (he’s been in a total of 11 Star Wars movies so far). He’ll be returning in The Rise of Skywalker; you can even see him in the trailers released so far.

Something you won’t see in that trailer: C-3PO’s constant companion R2-D2, the trash can-shaped robot that beeped and booped its way into all of our hearts throughout the Star Wars ennealogy. Is it possible R2-D2 will sit out The Rise of Skywalker?

Of course not. Daniels has confirmed that C-3PO’s bestie will make an appearance in Episode IX. Speaking at a press conference at the Le Bristol Hotel in Paris, Daniels even hinted at some specifics. And he speaks pretty decent French!

Redditor Futur_alliance stepped in to translate. Here’s the relevant, paraphrased bit:

"Confirms that R2 will be in a desert scene, where he explained that because he can’t really see, he has to pretend to see R2, and at one point in TROS, he has to put his hand on R2 as he usually does but that they took R2’s helmet off this time, so he almost fell over. Had a laugh. Says R2 is played by an actor called Hassan, at least for that scene."

A headless/helmetless R2? That presents more questions that it answers, but at least we know R2 will be in the thick of the action at some point. Episode IX promises to be the end of the line for several of our legacy characters, so even if the droids are functionally immortal, we may not see them much again. Any time we can spend with R2 at this point is precious.

Futur_alliance continued: “(Daniels) Says the film has a lot of secrets. What he means by that is anyone’s guess.” Since it’s the final film in the cycle, we’d expect a mess of mysteries to be solved.
