Kit Harington is down to play Severus Snape in a Harry Potter prequel

This past weekend, Kit Harington spoke on a panel at ACE Comic Con, and while he talked plenty about Game of Thrones and his forthcoming role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some of the more interesting moments came when the moderator asked him about another franchise he’s apparently a big fan of: Harry Potter.

“I am a Gryffindor,” he said when the conversation inevitably turned to House identification. “I’ve thought very deeply about it.” Although interestingly, he thinks Jon Snow is a Hufflepuff. I guess he is a pretty loyal dude.

As for his favorite book/movie, Harington named either Prisoner of Azkaban (cause it suddenly took a dark turn and it turned in grown-up Harry Potter) or Goblet of Fire, which eventually won out.

But the real fireworks came when the moderator asked a fan question: if Harington had the opportunity to appear in a Harry Potter prequel movie about the Marauders — the clique of James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew who went to Hogwarts a generation before Harry and friends — who would he play. “Snape,” Harington answered firmly.

"Snape is the best character, ever. The storyline of Snape. Severus Snape is the most tragic, wonderful, brilliant…He’s a character you hate, and then end up loving. He’s just phenomenal. I don’t think I’m right for him, so I’ll play Sirius. But, whoever gets to play Snape, that’s a great character."

Indeed, Harington does seem to have Slytherin aspirations — he mentions it elsewhere in the video — but thinks he’s too much of a Gryffindor to fulfill them. Could he play Snape? I dunno — throw some grease into wavy hair of his, gaunt up his face a little…maybe…?

It’s probably a moot point, at least for now. Warner Bros. is going forward with its Fantastic Beasts prequel series, but there’s been no talk of a Marauders movie, despite fans being passionate about it. Still, here’s an exciting new candidate for dream-casting opportunities.
