Doctor Who: Season Ten of the Classic Series is now available on Blu-Ray in North America!
By James Aggas
North American Doctor Who fans, the Third Doctor’s fourth season has finally been released on Blu-Ray in the US and Canada!
It’s taken a couple more months to reach us after its initial limited release in the UK, but it’s finally here. Season Ten of the Classic Series of Doctor Who – or Doctor Who: Jon Pertwee – Complete Season Four, as it’s been released over here – is out now in both the US and Canada!
I’ve been rather excited to check out this latest release. Thanks to repeats during the thirtieth anniversary, Jon Pertwee was the first Doctor that I ever watched. He was a Doctor who had a lot of style – with his shock of white hair, flowing cape and Venusian martial arts skills, he was a figure who truly stood out!
And the same is true of his fourth season, too. Unsurprisingly, the tenth season of the series was a pretty major one, and featured some truly memorable stories. We had the multi-Doctor shenanigans of The Three Doctors; the colorful monster story Carnival of Monsters; the epic space war of Frontier in Space; the classic Terry Nation storytelling in Planet of the Daleks, and the environmental horror of The Green Death.
But beyond that, the season also had some truly major turning points for the series, too. After over three seasons, the Third Doctor’s long exile on Earth is finally lifted in the opening story, allowing him to travel the universe again. However, by the end of the season, he also has to say goodbye to his companion, Jo Grant. If you haven’t seen that yet, make sure to have the tissues ready.

What to expect
Along with the newly remastered stories themselves, there are a huge amount of special features included in this set. So much so that I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to write up a review that covers all of it! While I was able to review this month’s New Series Blu-Ray – The Complete David Tennant Collection – that was because it was primarily a re-package of previously existing material, much of which I had already checked out a great deal of.
This new Blu-Ray set, on the other hand, not only collects special features from previous DVD releases, but of course includes so many brand new extras, too!
"A brand new feature-length documentary examining the Third Doctor’s Era, with archival contributions from Jon Pertwee, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks plus all-new interviews with Katy Manning, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, presented by Matthew Sweet.Updated special effects and surround sound mix for Planet of the Daleks.Five new instalments of Behind the Sofa, featuring Katy Manning, Richard Franklin (Captain Yates) and John Levene (Sergeant Benton), along with 21st century Doctor Who panel Phil Collinson (Producer/Executive Producer), Pete McTighe (Writer) and Joy Wilkinson (Writer).Looking for Lennie, a documentary investigating the life of director Lennie Mayne.Keeping up with the Jones’, which sees Katy Manning with Stewart Bevan (Cliff Jones) pay a return visit to the Welsh locations from The Green Death.Plus: a repeat omnibus of The Green Death unseen since Christmas 1973, rare Panopticon convention footage, Blu-ray trailer, HD photo galleries plus scripts, production files and rare documentation provided as PDFs.The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD including two episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures that saw Katy Manning’s Jo Jones meet the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith)."
I’m definitely excited to check all of these new features out for myself, as well as watch Jon Pertwee’s penultimate season remastered! Expect a review on this…well, when I have the chance to enjoy everything on it!
