Neil Patrick Harris, of Doogie Howser and How I Met Your Mother fame, is joining the cast of Lana Wachowski’s upcoming sequel to The Matrix, the movie series where robots harvest human beings for the electricity running through their nervous systems while trapping them in an advanced computer simulation that is, in actuality, our world.

I would say this is peak 2019 but I have no idea what that means. It’s unexpected.

Since learning that The Matrix would be making a comeback, we’ve heard plenty of exciting announcements. Original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are both coming back, even though their characters…well, if you’ve saw The Matrix Revolutions you probably have questions about their presence. Then there’s Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who will Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in a “lead role.” Some fans have wondered if he could be playing a young Morpheus, the character played by Laurence Fishburne in the original trilogy — Fishburne, for whatever reason, is not coming back, or at least we haven’t heart anything.

But I have no idea who Harris could play. A new character, I assume. If he doesn’t give us at least one musical number I’ll feel cheated.

It’s not like Harris hasn’t done drama. He had a role in David Fincher’s Gone Girl, and spent three seasons in heavy makeup as Count Olaf in Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. And now he’s a science fiction warrior battling the rise of the machines. Guy can do it all!
