Outlander cast teases new family dynamics, hard choices, and Adso the cat

Outlander was all the buzz at this year’s New York Comic-Con, and had quite possibly the largest crowd of any of the panels at the show. I was at panels throughout the weekend, and rest assured, Outlander fans brought the love.

While at NYCC, the cast spoke to TV Insider about the upcoming season 5, what fans can expect from the impending revolution, Jamie’s order to kill Murtagh, and of course, Jamie and Claire becoming grandparents.

It’s not easy to be ordered to kill your best friend and godfather, but alas, at the end of season 4, that is exactly what Jamie is asked to do. Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) spoke a bit about the complicated situation:

"Jamie’s a man of honor and a man of his word. To be on the side of the British for him is certainly going to be an interesting moral dilemma. He’s going to find himself between a rock and a hard place."

Man, they just reunited, too. Outlander why do you have to toy with our hearts like that?!

Duncan Lacroix (Murtagh) was asked how Murtagh will react to this news, but didn’t and couldn’t say much of anything, because spoilers.

"Jamie is a patriarch of his own now and he has to take care of a whole community, Murtagh has come to an accommodation with that and an understanding."

It sounds like the characters will have some serious hurdles to jump in season 5. That includes Lord John Grey (David Berry) who is being pulled in two different directions.

"He’s stuck in the middle, he’s got allegiance with the Frasers, and with the crown so he’s torn about that whole thing. How does he deal with it? You’ll have to wait and see."

Come on, Berry, give us more than that!

But seriously, folks, it will be very interesting to follow John’s story with this conflict on the horizon. He’s in love with Jamie and always has been, but as mentioned, he’s a man of the crown. That will definitely complicate things in season 5.

In season 5, Jamie and Claire officially become grandparents. Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser) talked about how that dynamic will mix things up.

"We spent so much time establishing Fraser’s Ridge last season and now we get to see the family really settled in. The community is really growing, and it’s so nice for Jamie and Claire to have Brianna and Roger there and enjoy being grandparents. It raises a lot of issues for them. Claire is very concerned with protecting her family and that brings in some really cool medical stuff for me this season."

I think a relationship all Outlander fans are eager to see more of is the one between Murtagh and Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta. In season 4, a romance between the two of them began, and with things taking a drastic shift as Murtagh hides out in her basement, we’re curious if it will continue. Maria Doyle Kennedy (Jocasta) talked a bit about this.

"I’m proud of the show because they went for it. Because obviously it’s a new storyline and it wasn’t part of the books. The fact that they wanted to show an older couple that were passionate about each other, making love, in love, flirting, fighting. We don’t see very much of that on television, I thought it was brilliant they went for it."

And finally, I know Outlander fans are super excited to meet Adso the cat. We’ve seen all the adorable pictures on Twitter.

“Can I tell a secret? We’ve had six Adsos,” Heughan confessed. “They grow up too quickly so we had to find another pair. But every time they bring these new kittens, they’re just so cute. All work stops for a few minutes!”

The Droughtlander will come to a close on Feb. 16th, 2020, and its end will bring Adso, the Frasers, and another season of love and drama. I. can’t. wait.
