Sam Heughan: The Fraser family must resist being “torn apart” in Outlander season 5

Outlander season 5 is creeping up on us, and as it does, we’re learning more and more about what to expect. But what Sam Heughan (Jamie) had to say about the Fraser family during New York Comic-Con broke my heart.

While speaking to Hello Magazine, Heughan revealed that season 5 will not be easy for the Frasers. “This season is… about family,” he said. “And I think that this season is very much about the family being stronger together and being torn apart by all these different factors.”

Oh, Sam, please don’t do this to us. The Fraser family has to stick together — they must!

Of course, Heughan’s words don’t come as a complete shock considering where we left things at the end of season 4. Jamie has a lot to think about after receiving the order to go after Murtagh. That will certainly put him and his family through some strain. And then there’s Brianna and Roger’s growing family, which is a wonderful addition but will come with its own set of hurdles to jump.

In the Outlander season 5 trailer, we hear Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) essentially blame herself for bringing the family to the Carolinas in the first place. This guilt is likely due to the impending revolution that is about to change everyone’s lives forever. Clearly, there is a lot to process here, and it’s no wonder the Fraser family is going to be affected by it.

Balfe also talked to Hello, and shared one thing she found “unfortunate” about season 5:

"I think that [Native American storyline] was such a cool element to our show. It was so beautiful to be able to tell that time in American history. It’s unfortunate we don’t have as many elements of that this season, I think it was so rich and so beautiful, and it just added another element to the show that we didn’t have before. So that’s special for that reason."

I absolutely agree. That storyline brought a completely different angle to the show, and has was hauntingly beautiful. Heughan agrees:

"Yeah the Native American side of it for me as well is just so fun to play and we have this fantastic cast that came over from Canada and really brought their own culture and their own life to it."

Whatever happens to the Frasers, writer Matthew B. Roberts is here to assure us that season 5 is going to be just as amazing as Outlander has ever been…or at least as heartbreaking:
