Stranger Things 3 pulled in a series-high number of viewers
By Ariba Bhuvad
Stranger Things has managed to surpass its own record when it comes to viewership. Season 3 was watched by 64 million households in the first four weeks after it dropped, a high watermark for the series. And why wouldn’t it be? Stranger Things 3 was a terrific season filled with drama, laughter, and of course, heartbreak. No wonder it pulled these kinds of numbers.
This is great news all around for Netflix, which recently renewed Stranger Things for a fourth season. If the series continues down this path, it could make a Netflix subscription indispensable, which is good both because a lot of Netflix’s higher-profile original shows have been ending lately (Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and because it’ll soon face stiff competition from the likes of Disney+, HBO Max, and other streaming services.
The season 3 viewership numbers were released in Netflix’s quarterly shareholder letter. They revealed a bunch about other successful shows, too. The limited series Unbelievable reached 32 million households in the first 28 days, while the movie Tall Girl pulled in 41 million over the same time period. All this adds up to increased earnings and a surge in stock prices.
