You can download Disney+ titles and keep them after they go in the vault

And Disney continues its inevitable march towards streaming domination. We already know they’re dumping 70 years of classic content on us with the new streaming service Disney+, plus hotly anticipated new shows like The Mandalorian. And all this for$7 per month, which is less than what Netflix charges. If you’re a Verizon subscriber, you get Disney+ free for a year.

This will work, Disney says to you. You will buy this. You HAVE to.

Continuing in that vein, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced another perk at Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit: Disney+ subscribers will be able to download movies and TV shows and store them locally, meaning that if they’re ever not available to stream directly for whatever reason, you can still watch them. As long as you’re still a subscriber, that is. “If you wanted to download 10 classic Disney films that may not have all been available at once before, you can do that, basically fill all of your hard drive on one of your devices, and you or your child can watch wherever they are,” Iger said.

Now, you might be asking why Disney films would cycle off of Disney+ at all. In fact, while the service will be packed with content out of the gate, it won’t include everything. The original Avengers movie won’t be available at launch, nor the Pixar classic Up, now Spice World, which is the greatest sin of all. In some cases, this may be Disney leaving a few things to put out down the line — they’ve been known to put some of their classic movies “in the vault” every now and then, and the strategy may continue with Disney+. In other cases, the company made licensing agreements with services like Netflix before Disney+ really got rolling, so some movies be moving on and off the service for a while.

But again, at least you’ll be able to download them and store them when they’re available.
