HBO and Sky have teamed up to present a four-part miniseries about Russia’s Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia and probably the most powerful female monarch in the history of the world. Played by British actress and Oscar-winner Helen Mirren (The Queen), the series follows Catherine in her tumultuous and influential later years, when the 18th century Russian empire rose triumphant and she was carrying on a torrid love affair with Prince Grigory Potemkin. Here’s the official HBO show website story teaser:
"Amid scandal, intrigue and immense conflict, Russian empress Catherine the Great (Helen Mirren) develops a unique and devoted relationship with Grigory Potemkin (Jason Clarke) as they overcome their adversaries and serve as the architects of modern-day Russia."
Catherine the Great also stars Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), Gina McKee (Notting Hill) and Game of Thrones veterans Paul Kaye (Thoros of Myr) and Clive Russel (the Blackfish). This promises to be one sumptuous, epic and costume-packed historical drama. Watch it with us!
