Paul Feig is reviving Universal’s Dark Universe? But why?

You’ve heard of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right? The industry-smashing behemoth that’s dominated movies for a decade now? Naturally, other studios have tried to get in on the party. Warner Bros. has its DC Universe, AMC has the Walking Dead Universe, etc.

One of the more notable shared universe failures came from Universal, which tried to start one based on old monster movies — you know, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man and stuff. We only got two movies that were technically part of this universe: Dracula Untold and The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, and neither made much of an impact.

We thought the Dark Universe was dead, but apparently no? Speaking to ComingSoon.net, Paul Feig — the writer/director behind Bridesmaids and Last Christmas, Emilia Clarke’s upcoming romcom — shared info about a new movie called Dark Army. “I finished the first draft of the script and I’m so excited about it!” he enthused. “I’m literally on fire about getting this movie made as soon as I can. I turned it into the Dark Universe people last week and they loved it. Now it’s going over to the heads of Universal, so we’ll see.”

Wait, there are still “Dark Universe people” at Universal. They’re still trying to make this happen? Will Ansel Elgort play the Creature from the Black Lagoon? I’m getting ahead of myself.

Feig also talked a bit about Dark Army itself. We don’t know exactly what it’s about, but apparently Feig is aiming for a Bride of Frankenstein vibe, in that it’ll be a horror story that takes itself seriously but isn’t afraid to inject a bit of humor in there.

And that sounds fun enough, but I still don’t know why it needs to be part of a “Dark Universe.” Not everything has to be the MCU, people.
