Spider-Man has been at the forefront of a whole lot of drama recently. For a while, after Marvel and Sony couldn’t come to an agreement over whether he could be used in movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it even seemed like his days in the MCU were over. But not if Tom Holland had anything to do with it! The actor made a personal request of Disney chief Bob Iger, who then spoke to Sony film chairman Tom Rothman, and before we knew it Spider-Man was back in the mix.
But it turns out, this deal was inevitable with or without Holland. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rothman — along with Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn — talked about the Spider-Man kerfuffle. Apparently, his absence was never going to be permanent. But then why all the drama? Horn explains, sort of.
"The fan base, which is important to all of us, seemed to really respond to what Tom and his folks have done before with our people. They like the fact that the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Kevin Feige were involved [in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home]. We heard feedback out there that suggested that joining forces once again was probably really a good idea."
They heard feedback out there? I think he means they heard the angry voices of fans all over the world. Because, let’s be honest, we were all furious.
Rothman elaborated:
"This was a classic win-win-win. A win for Sony, a win for Disney, a win for the fans. The only thing I would say is that news cycles and the rhythm of negotiations do not necessarily overlap. And this is, in the words of Shakespeare, a consummation devoutly to be wished. We would have gotten there, and the news got ahead of some things."
This interview gets more and more curious, doesn’t it? The news got ahead of things? I’m not sure that makes a whole lot of sense, just saying.
Based on what both Rothman and Horn had to say, they’re making it seem like it’s silly that anyone thought this separation was permanent. And while yes, the media does have a tendancy of running away with itself, I’m not entirely sure that’s what happened here.

After this interview, it almost seems like Sony and Marvel bickered over Spider-Man to create hype. You guys couldn’t have quashed whatever beef you had without causing a fan panic? At least he’s securely back in the MCU and we can celebrate his return. Especially after that post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, I’m not remotely ready to let him go.
