The Witcher finally gets a release date, plus a new trailer

Okay, first things first: The Witcher, Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s popular fantasy novels (and followed up by an even more popular series of video games from CD Projekt Red) has a release date: you can watch the eight-episode first season on December 20.

God, I feel like we’ve been waiting forever. Better late than never.

Netflix made the announcement at the Lucca Comics & Games convention, complete with a brand new trailer. Check it out below!

Lots of fun stuff for fans in there. We see Geralt using a sign against some assailants, get some flirty dialogue between him and Yennefer, and spare a moment for his trusty horse, Roach. Oh, and Geralt’s in the tub.

I think the trailer does a good job of catching newbies up to speed on the story, but just in case, here’s Netflix’s synopsis:

"THE WITCHER is an epic tale of fate and family.  The story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified."

Those three individuals would be Geralt, a professional monster hunter; Yennefer, a strong-willed sorceress; and Ciri, a wayward princess who eventually becomes Geralt’s protégé. Book-readers may join me in wondering why Dandelion, Geralt’s bawdy bard buddy, doesn’t feature more heavily in these descriptions since he’s a pretty big presence in the novels, but I’m willing to be convinced.

Overall, I like the trailer. The production values are certainly high, the cast looks convincing, and the source material is solid. So far as we can tell, the first season will roughly be based off the first two books in the series, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, both of which are closer to short story collections than novels. It’ll be up to showrunner Lauren Hissrich and her team to weave them into a coherent narrative.

Next. The Witcher author thinks Netflix show can equal or surpass Game of Thrones. dark
