Colin Farrell may play the Penguin—Does The Batman have too many villains?

Now that Ben Affleck has left the bat-building, Warner Bros. has been building a cast for The Batman, the next movie to feature the Caped Crusader. Twilight star Robert Pattinson is Bruce Wayne. Zoe Kravitz is Catwoman. Paul Dano is Riddler, and Jeffrey Wright is Jim Gordon. The Wrap reports that Andy Serkis (Gollum from The Lord of the Rings movies) is in talks to play Alfred, Batman’s faithful butler, which is a bit of a curveball of a pick but sure. All in all, we have the makings of a fine bat-cast for a good bat-movie.

But now, Deadline reports that Colin Farrell is in talks to play the Penguin. First of all, I have to wonder why they’re looking at someone who so thoroughly doesn’t resemble the Penguin as most think of him. The character has been around for a long time, and usually he’s portrayed as short and stubby. Colin Farrell is…not those things.

But that’s fine; I guess they’re going for a different take. I’m mainly starting to get antsy that they’re throwing too many villains into the mix. Does Batman really have to fight Catwoman and the Riddler and the Penguin? There’s also a rumor going around that Matthew McConaughey may play Harvey Dent, the man who will become Two-Face, but I wouldn’t put much stock in that just yet. The point is that that’s a lot of characters for one movie. Usually, Bats faces off against two baddies per movie at most, and that doesn’t always work out. Three is pushing it.

Is it too early to get worried about The Batman? Probably. I’m looking forward to what director Matt Reeves does with the character — apparently he wants to take Batman back to his detective roots — but maybe save something for the sequel.

Next. Jean Smart had never heard of Watchmen before being cast as Agent Blake. dark
