The cast for Amazon’s adaptation of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s epic 14-book Wheel of Time series is coming together. We already know the principal cast, which includes Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike as the Aes Sedai Moiraine. Other than her, it’s mostly unknown actors playing the younger characters, with Dutch actor Josha Stradowski as lead character Rand al’Thor.

Now, Amazon is filling out the supplementary roles. The other day, they announced that Michael McElhatton — known forever to Game of Thrones as the dastardly Roose Bolton — will be playing Tam Al’Thor, Rand’s father.

Roose and Tam could not be more different. Roose was a cold-hearted climber who betrayed and murdered his own king, not to mention raising quite possibly the most despicable person we ever met on the show, Ramsay Bolton. Tam Al’Thor, on the other hand, is a steadfast and good father to Rand, and a fine warrior. Game of Thrones fans are going to have a confusing experience watching him in Wheel…or at least I probably will. With his long list of credits, McElhatton should have no trouble pulling off the shift.

The Wheel of Time is a gigantic story. Generally, it’s about an epic clash between the Dragon and the Dark One, two mythic figures destined to battle generation after generation, but that undersells its depth and detail. There are a lot of characters, a lot of places visited and cultures explored, and a lot of storytelling beats to cover. It’s anybody’s guess as to whether Amazon can pull it off, but at least they’re off to a good start with the casting.
