Why do Starks wear blue? Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton explains

facebooktwitterreddit

“In winter we wear blue,” is possibly but probably not something a member of the Stark family once said to another member at some point during the clan’s thousands-year-long history. At least, that was the idea Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton had when initially creating outfits for the Starks of Winterfell we came to know and love, as she reveals in the video below. Give it a watch!

I’d never really noticed the blue-grey tones on the Stark family’s outfits before — I think they veered toward brown and black towards the end of the series, but it makes perfect sense to set these characters apart from their surroundings.

Clapton designed costumes for the show from start to finish, turning in spectacular work for eight straight seasons. You can see them on display in the upcoming Game of Thrones: The Costume, a gorgeous coffee table book put together by Clapton and Gina McIntyre. Let’s take a peek inside, shall we?

Ooooh.

Ahhhh!
