BritBox has quietly launched in the UK. But when can Doctor Who fans expect to watch the Classic Series? Perhaps sooner than they think…

So BritBox has finally launched in the UK. The service which originally began in the US before later being released in Canada features a huge amount of British content, including Ashes to Ashes, Broadchurch and Downton Abbey. Of course, the question on everyone’s mind (at least those reading this article) is this: when is Doctor Who coming to BritBox?

In the US and Canada, a key selling point of the streaming service – perhaps its biggest selling point – is its collection of Doctor Who, particularly the Classic Series.

Other streaming services had offered Classic Who in the past, including Netflix. But these would usually be extremely limited selections – random stories, sometimes significant or highly praised, sometimes not. Usually, these selections wouldn’t even cover all the Doctors of the Classic Series.

Thankfully, when BritBox came along, it changed that. It didn’t just offer a random collection – from the very beginning, it featured hundreds of episodes from the Classic Series. Featuring so many stories from the first seven Doctors, the service has only grown its collection over time, with animated episodes, reconstructions, or even Dalek stories that weren’t originally included until last year. It’s the biggest collection of Doctor Who episodes available on any streaming service. But when is it coming to the UK?

Classic Who on BritBox

Thankfully, fans won’t have too long to wait. Doctor Who will be arriving on BritBox in the UK on Boxing Day – Dec 26th. It may be a late Christmas present, but it’s better late than never.

I must admit, I’m really excited about this. Many New Series fans are keen to watch some of the Classic Series, but while DVDs are cheap and highly accessible in the UK (which isn’t always true for the US and Canada), it’s still great for fans to have one more option to watch the show.

More from Winter is Coming

On top of that, while North America certainly has its highly dedicated fans, it has to be said: it doesn’t have the cultural impact in the US or Canada that it does in the UK. The series is very much a part of Britain’s DNA, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone – and I mean anyone – who hasn’t heard of it, or even doesn’t know what a Dalek is.

So it’s wonderful to know that such a huge collection of episodes will now be available to stream in the UK. This will be a perfect opportunity for fans to discover eras of the show that they barely know about, find brand new favorite stories to watch over and over again, and of course, gain a deeper appreciation of the New Series as a result. It’s been a long time coming, but Classic Who is finally coming home in a big way.
