What can we predict about the final season of Vikings from the episode titles?
In early December, History will air the two-episode premiere for the sixth and final season of Vikings, its venerable historical drama. With that date rapidly approaching, we thought now would be a good time to take a look at the titles for the first two episodes and see if we can glean any meaning from them.
Appropriate enough, Episode 601 is entitled “New Beginnings.” When last we saw them, Bjorn and Hvitserk — two of Ragnar’s sons — had defeated King Ivar — another of his sons — along with their allies King Olaf and King Harald. Bjorn is declared King of Kattegat, but the Seer tells him the war is not over. He’s wary of his alliance with King Harald, who also wants to be the King of Kattegat. There are a lot of would-be kings in one place. It’s stressful.
Vikings on History. Largetha.
The episode’s title can mean a lot of things for the show’s main players, many of whom are readjusting to a new status quo. Bjorn must settle in as King of Kattegat, hopefully bringing peace to the kingdom his father Ragnar and mother Lagertha built. Speaking of Lagertha, she’s no longer a warrior and has her own adjusting to do. (Although based on the trailer, she doesn’t get to enjoy a life of relaxation for very long.) Ubbe, off looking for Floki, is also setting out on a new adventure.
At the end of season 5, Ivar escaped Kattegat and ended up on the Silk Road. Will he return to face his brothers? Stay on the Silk Road and hang out with Marco Pollo? The trailer for season 6 shows Ivar siding with a new villain — Prince Oleg — who wants to take the crown for his own reasons. Will Ivar betray this new guy and eventually side with his family, or is he hitching his wagon to a new star?
The second episode is called “The Prophet.” Now that title is a good deal more intriguing.
In season 5, Ivar killed the Seer of Kattegat, so maybe someone will need to take his place as a new prophet? If so, who will that be? The likely candidate is Floki, whom we last saw dying in a cave collapse…only almost certainly not, because Vikings rarely kills off major character, and when it does, it’s not in so ambiguously symbolic a manner, as it was with the Christain-hating Floki dying next to a stone cross.
[Credit: History Channel]My guess is Ubbe will find Floki and bring him back to Kattegat, where he will become the new Seer, “The Prophet.”
Vikings season 6 premieres on December 4, only on History.
