Brand new major details have been revealed for Series 12, as we learn which writers will be returning from Series 11 – and who will be writing for Doctor Who for the first time.

It’s fair to say that news regarding the upcoming Series 12 of Doctor Who has been incredibly slow to non-existent. But Chris Chibnall has finally bestowed upon us some concrete details in the form of behind the scenes talent – the writers  of Series 12.

Three new writers have entered the Whoniverse:

Nina Metivier: Although new to the long pantheon of Doctor Who writers, she has actually had experience within the machinery of the series previously, being the script editor for Series 11 stories The Woman Who Fell To Earth and It Takes You Away. The latter story was my favorite episode of Series 11, so I’m definitely intrigued as to what Metivier will deliver.

Maxine Alderton: She has been writing for British soap opera Emmerdale for over a decade and has won a British Screenwriters Award in 2017 for her work on children’s show The Worst Witch. She was also nominated for a Writer’s Guild of Great Britain award in 2015 for her prolific work on Emmerdale.

Charlene James: Multi-award winning playwright and screenwriter, most famous for her play Cuttin’ It which has won many accolades and made James a finalist in the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize which highlights female playwrights.

One of the returning writers is Vinay Patel, who wrote last year’s Demons of the Punjab.

There are also three returning writers from Series 11: Vinay Patel (Demons of The Punjab), Ed Hime (It Takes You Away) and Pete McTighe (Kerblam!).

More from Winter is Coming

Despite no official confirmation on Series 12’s episode count, it’s fair to assume there will be ten episodes, with the guest writers totaling six stories and Chris Chibnall penning the remaining four stories. Talking of our current showrunner, Chibnall had this to say about the writers slate for Series 12:

"We’re thrilled that Doctor Who continues to attract some of the most exciting and dynamic talent working in television. Along with our returning faces, we’re excited to welcome new members to the Doctor Who family. The Doctor Who team is crammed with British television’s brightest writers and directors: we’ve adored working with them, and can’t wait to show you the explosive stuff they’ve created!"
