It looks like the Commonwealth is coming to The Walking Dead
By Ariba Bhuvad
Based on what went down in the latest episode, The Walking Dead may soon be introducing a new community from the comics into the series. Now, if it’s what we think it is, “soon” doesn’t necessarily mean this season or even next, but it looks like the Commonwealth is coming.
In this past Sunday’s episode, “Bonds,” Eugene spent a lot of time talking to a stranger over the radio. We don’t know who she is or where she’s calling from. For all we know she could be a danger to everyone and everything Eugene knows, but the apocalypse is lonely and it’s nice to talk to someone.
In true Eugene fashion, he divulged just a tad bit too much to this mystery woman, which on The Walking Dead always spells trouble. This season has been closely mirroring the comic books, so based on Eugene’s storyline thus far, it seems like we are treading down the path that will lead us to the Commonwealth
In the comics, the Commonwealth is a huge community — we’re talking tens of thousands of people, far beyond what most of our intrepid survivors have seen so far. They even play football games in a stadium. It’s basically civilization.
If Eugene is talking to someone from the Commonwealth, it’s likely a woman named Stephanie, a character from the comics. On the page, they keep talking for a long while, until the end of the Whisperers storyline.
Considering where we currently are storywise in The Walking Dead, we probably have a while before we actually see the Commonwealth on our screens. And if AMC is serious about having the show go on for…gulp…20 seasons, it may have to make some adjustments, because the comics end with the Commonwealth storyline. It sounds like they’re already planning to pivot.

Time will tell where the series is going to take us, but in the meantime, here’s hoping that Eugene doesn’t tell this mystery woman everything.
