Robert Downey Jr. will play Iron Man again on Disney+…kind of

What if…Robert Downey Jr. returned as Iron Man and somehow salvaged pieces of our broken hearts in a post-Endgame world? Well, don’t get too excited, because it’s nothing substantial, but we do have some interesting news.

According to Comicbook.com, 2021 is going to be a very big year for Marvel, what with all of the movies and Disney+ shows coming down the pipeline. One of those shows is What If…?, an animated series that will explore what could have happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe if things played out differently. While playing with puppies and answering fan questions for Buzzfeed Celeb, Jeff Goldblum gave us some details:

"I went to the Disney Studios and I recorded the Grandmaster’s voice for an episode of a show that’s going to be on Disney+ called What If…? where it’s an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel. And this episode included the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so Robert Downey will do a voice in that. And Korg, Taika Waititi, had already recorded his voice for that. So yeah, I enjoyed it for a couple of hours. I enjoyed doing that again. So the Grandmaster is well."

Yes, that’s right, folks! Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man in What If…? Sure, it’ll be brief, and he’s just doing the voice, but it’s something!

I don’t know about all of you, but I’m stoked to see how Iron Man and Grand Master interact and what changes to bring them together. Let your imaginations run wild!

Along with Robert Downey Jr., there is a very exciting list of cast members returning to lend their voices to MCU characters on What If…? Looks like it’s going to be a marvelous couple years.

Speaking of Marvel Disney+ series, Anthony Mackie talked a little with Deadline about taking on the role of Captain American in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is in production now. “We meet, we read the different scenes, go over it, rewrite it, tweak it to where it works,” he said. “We’ve always done that. Marvel has always been very open-minded about letting us hone the scripts to our character.”

"I’ve been in the business for 20 years and I’ve been fortunate to do some amazing stuff and work with amazing people. For me, to be a black man in 2019 and be given the helm of Captain America with the history of black men in this country is a monumental step, not only in entertainment, but also in my life. It’s been extremely emotional. Look, my grandfather was a sharecropper, you know what I mean? There’s a lot of history and pain and triumph and joy that comes along with me being Captain America."

That is truly awesome.

And elsewhere in Marvel-world, a couple of the stars are doing their own version of What If…?, talking about the MCU roles they auditioned for before landing where they did. In Expanding the Universe, casting director Sarah Finn reveals that Chadwick Boseman originally auditioned to play Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy. Apparently, he played the role with a regal bearing, which wasn’t what they were going for. Instead, they cast Dave Bautista, who put more of a comedic spin on the part, but when it came time to cast T’Challa, aka Black Panther, Finn knew exactly who to call.

Other fun factoids:

  • Lupita Nyong’o, who played Nakia in Black Panther, auditioned to play Nebula, a role that eventually went to Karen Gillan.
  • Chris Pratt originally auditioned to play Captain America. Finn didn’t think he was quite right for that part, but brought him in to audition for Star Lord in Guardians, even though director James Gunn didn’t originally think he’d be a good fit. Ten seconds into the audition, Gunn’s mind was changed, and the rest is history.

If you’re an actor, you must love stories like this. Just because one audition doesn’t work out doesn’t mean the casting director might not put you in something else equally awesome down the road.
