The Warden of the North (season 1)

Ned Stark only made it through the first nine episodes of Game of Thrones, and his look didn’t change all that often. Ned’s costumes do, however, set the tone for the rest of the Northern wear that appears throughout the series, particularly when it comes to his children’s attire.

Being Warden of the North, it’s natural that Ned’s most iconic look would be the one he wears at the beginning of the series, when he’s still actually in the North. In one of the show’s first scenes, Ned takes the life of a Night’s Watch deserter, showing off this prototypical outfit while he’s at it . He dons a fur cloak with a leather doublet beneath it, and he’s carrying his Valyrian steel longsword, Ice.

Ned’s look can best be described as practical, and it’s clear that he doesn’t cave into the trends sweeping through Westeros. Not only does that attitude typify that of Northerners, but it also underlines how much Ned values qualities like honor and constancy. Ned never cared much for appearances or power plays, and it shows in his wardrobe. He’s concerned with surviving and doing what’s right, and his wardrobe is focused on serving those needs.

Shadows of Ned’s costume would show up throughout the rest of the series. Arya sports a leather doublet and fur cloak in the later seasons, and Sansa and Jon both wear cloaks modeled after their father’s. Robb’s outfits during his days as King of the North also resemble his father’s in certain aspects. All of the Stark children have attempted to model their values and decisions off of Ned, and their attire has followed.
