The Dragon Queen (season 7)

Daenerys’ arrival at Dragonstone marks a significant turning point in the series, particularly when it comes to her own character arc. It also sets into motion the chain of events that finally brings all of the characters’ storylines together after six long seasons of traveling the Seven Kingdoms apart. The change in the show’s tone can also be seen in Daenerys’ shift in costumes.

When she reaches her birthplace, Dany wears an outfit that’s mostly black, though it does have some red undertones. The colors of the costume — along with the red scaling that resembles dragonskin — represent her Tarygaryen heritage. It’s fitting that she should be flaunting her roots when she steps foot on the place where her ancestors launched their own invasion of Westeros.

More than that, though, the darker colors symbolize the more severe tone that the series takes on at this point. The characters are finally tasked with overcoming obstacles that have been building for seasons, and their costumes become darker and more grave.

It’s also important to note that Dany’s costumes from this point onward rarely show much skin, and not just because winter has finally come. From the moment she arrives at Dragonstone, she’s no longer attempting to win men over in order to achieve power. She’s fully in command of her power and needn’t be influenced by anyone.
